Helpful Excercises for Whiplash Neck Injury




    Whiplash is one of the most common road vehicle accident injuries with over a million of cases happening every year. The term “whiplash” refers to the injury that affects the ligaments, muscles and tendons in the neck. It can be very irritating at times. At least 20% of the rear end collisions no matter how small are the accident result in a whiplash. The injury is a result of the quick jerking motion of the neck backward and forward. When the head moves backward beyond its normal range it is termed as hyper-extension, when it comes forward it is known as hyper-flexation.

    Initial whiplash symptoms include sore neck, headaches, tingling sensation and sore shoulders. Whiplash can also result in some very serious injuries such as the brain damage and sometimes memory loss as well. The whiplash neck injury may require physical therapy as well in a lot of  cases.

    Motion exercises which may be useful during the whiplash neck injury:

    • Rotation of the head: Perform the rotation of the head in a gentle manner from left to right with 10-15 repetitions. Always start with a small angle and then try to extend further.
    • Forward and backward bending of the head: Start slowly by bringing your chin towards the chest then come back to your initial position. Then bring your head and neck backwards such as to see the sky or the ceiling of the room. Repeat these steps 10-15 times.
    • Sidewards bending of the head: Start slowly with bringing your left year towards your left shoulder. Repeat the same towards the right side. Start with minor movements and then try to extend the range of sidewards bending. Repeat these steps 10-15 times.

    These neck exercises if done daily or at least once in two days could definitely help in your speedy recovery from whiplash neck injury.
