Beauty and Coconut Oil

It is a sad fact that even the most expensive moisturizing creams contain mostly water and polyunsaturated fats. The reason why the skin feels smoother after using these expensive creams is that the water soaks into the skin and briefly fills the tissues with water, smoothing out wrinkles and making the skin feel younger. The effect is unfortunately short lived.

The polyunsaturated oils in these creams often do more damage than good because they cause oxidation and promote the development of free radicals. It is free radicals that cause the skin to wrinkle and become blemished with such things as liver spots.

In contrast many women in Asia continue to have beautiful and youthful skin well into their 50s. What is their secret? Well partly it is genetic heredity; but, it is also the use of coconut oil to stay young looking. In India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and South East Asia women use coconut oil to moisturize their skin and condition their hair.

Coconut oil is an unsaturated fat that contains antioxidant properties. As a result, it works very differently to polyunsaturated fats – it doesn’t promote the development of free radicals; indeed, it inhibits the development of free radicals and thus helps to keep the skin youthful and elastic.

When we are young the skin is kept moisturized and smooth by the sebum oil secreted from the sebaceous gland. As we get older the oil secreted by the sebum becomes less and that is why it becomes more important to moisturize the skin. The best way to replace this oil is with an unsaturated fat such as coconut oil.

The benefits of using coconut oil for moisturizing are several. Firstly, coconut oil is not greasy – you can put it on your skin or hair and you don’t feel unpleasantly greasy and shiny. Secondly, coconut oil has a pleasant aroma that is like a perfume. And thirdly, coconut oil is much cheaper than those expensive creams in your bathroom.

So why not buy a jar of coconut oil and give it a try as a moisturizer? The worst case scenario is that you waste a few dollars, and the best case scenario is that you slow down the process of ageing and boost your self-confidence.
